BYS - Stepping up in the game?

Hi Pretties

When I was at Kmart today I saw that a full sized BYS stand had popped up!  My local Kmart's have all stocked BYS in smaller stands, but never one the same size at the other cosmetics.

Of course I had to check it out and some of the products seemed to have change packaging and there were some products I had never seen before as well.

The products are just as cheap as always.  Foundations under $10, nail polishes $4, lip products $3-6, blushes under $4 and an assortment of other goodies.

I'm throughtly enjoying the 'rise of the cheap cosmetics' with BYS, Essence, Ulta3.  I think all are great quality for the price.

I picked up 3 things to try.  I got a blush, a lip gloss and an eye shadow palette.

The blush I got is in the colour Pretty in Pink.  It's a bright baby doll pink that is very pigmented but blends out really well.  It was $3.75.

The lip gloss I got is in the colour 05 Ruby Red and it is a shimmery orange toned red.  It was also $3.75.

Both of these items say they are not tested on animals (-:

The next thing I bought is this stunning eyeshadow palette.

This reminds me of the Australis Nudist Palette that I purchased recently only the metallic version.  Like the nudist palette this comes with a mirror although this one is smaller, and is in nude shades.  The locking mechanism is no where near as good on the BYS one, so I probably wouldn't take it travelling too often, but it will be fine at home.

Swatches!

None of the colours have names, but I think they are so pretty!  I'm very much looking forward to playing with this palette.  It was only $5.75.

Have you seen the big BYS stands?  Are you enjoying the 'rise of cheaper cosmetics?'

Sunday night haul night!

Hi Pretties

It's Sunday night and that means haul night!  I hope you all had a great weekend.

This week I bought a few items, not too many though as I am going to Melbourne next weekend!  Hurray!

First thing I bought was a Revlon lip butter in Peach Parfait.  I love this colour, I think it's so pretty.

Second purchase was a pair of false lashes by Revlon in the Fantasy Lengths range.  They are the 99501 Defining self adhesive lashes.  I have not tried these yet, or any lashes in fact but I am excited to try these.

As I posed about yesterday I bought two nail polishes by Ulta3 in Gold Digger and Silver Glitter.  These are so sparkly and pretty :)

For my birthday on Tuesday I bought myself a new Mac blush.  I have a slight addiction with Mac blushes and purchased the colour Melba to add to my collection.  It is a beautiful matte coral colour.  I raved about this blush here.

My last purchase is something I have been searching for for quite a while.  I've been looking for a peach/nude eyeliner and although I am yet to find one I found this white one by Chi Chi called Virgin that is not a bright white, nor is it sparkly so it works perfect for my waterline.

That's my haul for the week!

What did you get this week?

Ulta3 glitter nail polishes

Hi Pretties

I wanted to show you these Ulta3 glitter nail polishes I found today.

I'm not sure if these are new, but I have not seen them before in my local Ulta3 bins.  I got these ones at Coles for $2 each.

I purchased Gold Digger and Silver Glitter, but I also saw a blue glitter and one called Confetti in the bin and I believe there are a few more in this range.

Gold Digger is your pretty standard yellow gold with gold glitter and the silver is a very shinny grey with silver glitter.  The strange thing about these polishes is they dry with different textures.

The Silver Glitter feels chunky on your nails, much similar to Sally Hansen Gem Crush and Gold Digger dries smooth.  Strange...  Silver Glitter is a lot more 'glittery' too and becomes much shinier on your nails.

Who loves swatches?  We do!

I put these polishes on over the colour I already had on (Rimmel Lively Lilac) and have applied two coats of both.  The silver is more compacted than the gold, but I think both are really pretty :)

Have you tried the Ulta3 glitter polishes?

Product Rave - Mac Blush in Melba

Mac Blush in Melba

Hi Pretties

I would love to share with you my new favourite product!

My birthday was this week and to be honest, it was a pretty crappy day.  I had all my celebrations before my birthday so by the time Tuesday hit, there wasn't anything left to do!

So I decided to treat myself to a new Mac blush.  I'm a little obsessed with Mac blushes.  I love the packaging, the colours, the pay off and how pretty they look.  The MUA at my local counter and I decided Melba was the perfect blush to add to my collection.

Mac describes this blush as a soft coral peach (matte) and this retails for $41 AUD.  Now my favourite of late prior to this was Mac blush in Springsheen which is a light peach with gold gold pearl and it is a sheertone shimmer.  I LOVE Springsheen, but I wanted something less shimmery.

My colouring is fair with pink undertones, but my skin wears colours like a more neutral tone.  I can wear pinks and corals quite easily and this blush wears sort of like a matte bronzer, but more coral and pretty.

Here's a swatch!
Oh how I wish my camera did this justice!

This blush wears like a fairly typical Mac blush.  It is highly pigmented, long wearing and very build-able.

As I like my blush to be very subtle I apply my Mac blushes with a stippling brush (except Well Dressed).  I use the Manicare Artiste Professional Stippling Brush in No 17.  I think this is a great brush for blush!

My favourite thing about this Melba is that you can apply it ever so slightly, and it can just brighten your whole face up without being obvious.  Great for work!

Melba subtly brightens without being too obvious

So I'll make a suggestion to you, next time you want to spoil yourself at Mac, check out Melba!

Hi pretties

Just a quick nail of the day today.  Today's colour is Rimmel I love lasting finish in Lively Lilac :)

It is a really pretty pastel purple.

What colour is on your nails?

Random Tip

If you find it difficult to drink your 2L of water a day, divide your day into sections!

Get yourself a 400ml bottle as these seem so much smaller than a big bottle and give yourself 'deadlines'.

One bottle before morning tea 10:00
One bottle before lunch 12:00
One bottle before afternoon tea 15:00
One bottle before dinner 18:00
One bottle after dinner 21:00

That's easily your 2L done!

(2L is an average for most people, check with your doctor to find out how much water YOU should be drinking)

Do you drink your 2L?

April BellaBox - Road Tested

Hi Pretties

The time has come for the April BellaBox - Roadtested blog.  (You can read my open box post here!)

April's box had a nice mix of skin care, beauty and scented items.  I didn't love this box as much as March, so hopefully May will improve a little.  I've now signed up for Lust Have It as well so Bellabox, you have some competition!

Comvita Brightening Facial Exfoliant
The texture of this is quite nice.  Again the size of this sample with its consistency makes giving this a proper trial very difficult.  I only got one use out of it.  I do feel I was left with a 'glow' afterwards though.

Comvita Brightening Facial Serum
I disliked this sample for several reasons.  1) It's too small to try properly.  I like to use samples at least 4 times and you normally can with a 1.5ml sample, but this product didn't last me more than 2 uses.  2) It had the consistency of a foaming cleanser.  What the?  3) It went on sticky.  4) I still had to use my moisturiser as well.

Comvita Brightening Moisturiser
This moisturiser is quite a strange consistency.  When I squeezed it out of the sachet it kind of reminded me of clay but spread surprisingly well.  Again - too small a sample, but the one use I did get was quite nice.  Initially my skin felt a little sticky but it did absorb in about 15 minutes.  As the packet said it was quite a nice base for my make up.

Ulta3 Nail Polish
I received this in the colour Jade which is a pretty Christmassy green.  I find Ulta3 nail polishes to be a little hit and miss, and this one is a miss.  It went on nicely and fairly streak free, but 8 hours later I put my hand into my bag to pull out my keys and scratched every nail on my left hand!  That could probably have been prevented with a top coat, but I don't use them at the best of times so I'm not going to when I already have to do two coats.  I've read some people are not too impressed at getting a $2 nail polish in a luxury samples box and I have mixed feelings on this.  I'm not overly stoked to get it as a 'luxury sample', but I'd prefer to get a full sized nail polish as opposed to another sachet of something.

Benefit 'Hello Flawless' Foundation
When I saw this foundation in the box and read other reviews I originally thought this would be too yellow and too dark for me but it actually blends into my skin quite well.  The colour that it.  I find this foundation quite hard to blend both with primer and no primer.  I don't like using foundation brushes as I'm usually running late of a morning and find it much quicker to use my fingers and this doesn't seem to spread out that well.  Once it is on it does look quite blended though.  I don't feel that this leaves me flawless and I kind of feel I look a little shiny when it is on where I prefer a matte foundation.  It is light wearing and doesn't make me break out which is a plus.  While I like this foundation, I wouldn't go and buy it.  Looking forward to trying other Benefit products though!  I am quite interested in the Erase Paste.

pureDKNY Verbena
This perfume is quite nice.  It's not a scent I would buy a full sized bottle of.  Not that I disliked it, I just kind of feel that it is a little old for me?  I like something a little sweeter.  The scent is long wearing though and I could still smell it on myself 10 hours after application.

OP Therapy Body Hydrator
I really like this moisturiser.  It is nice and thick but also blends REALLY well which is often an issue with thick moisturisers.  It is not unscented as the packaging says, but it doesn't seem to have any added fragrance, just a generally cream smell to it.  It is nice and gentle and highly moisturising.  I've been using it on my upper arms where I tend to get eczema when the weather changes, and its been holding it off so I'm very happy about that.  We will see what happens though as winter gets closer.

Hollywood Feet Velvet Cushions
This is not a product I normally use, so I want to get a good use out of them and will use them when I go to Melbourne in a few weeks.  I shall update this section then.

Overall I'm pleased with this months BellaBox.  I did like last months a little better, but I especially enjoyed the moisturiser in this box.  I think the Comvita samples were a little small for their texture.  Normally you can get a couple of uses out of a 1.5ml sample but not these ones which is a shame.  Only getting to use something once is not going to make me want to go and buy it, so I think the small samples are counter productive for Comvita.

I have also signed up to Lust Have It now so BellaBox is going to have a little competition next month!  I am NOT planning on dropping BellaBox at this stage though.

You can sign up to BellaBox here.

Tutorial - Using the Australis Nudist Palette

Hi Pretties

I have just done a review on the Australis Nudist palette so I thought I would do a quick tutorial to show you one look you can do using this palette!

Here is the finished look!  (Excuse the headband I forgot to take if off before I took my photo).  For the rest of the look I just kept my make up simple with only foundation, powder, blush and a pale lipstick.

1. Prime your eyes - I used Mac Paint Pot in Bare Study.

2. Apply a highlight to the inner corner and brow bone - I used the first colour in the palette which is Intensifeye Trio Bees Knees Shade One.

3. Apply the 5th colour (Intensifeye Quad Choc-a-Block Shade Two) to the lid and up into the crease.

4. Apply the 7th shade into the crease and outer v, up towards the brow bone.  This colour is Paparazzi Perfect Snap Attack.  Do a thin half line of this colour under your bottom lashes as well.

5. Blend!

6. Apply eyeliner - I used Maybelline Master Precision.

7. Apply mascara - I used Covergirl Lash Perfection.

Viola!

Your finished look.

Review - Australis Nudist Palette

Hi Pretties

As promised, my review on the Australis Nudis Palette.  The 'Australis answer to the Naked Palette'.  After searching various Targets I finally found this yesterday for $9.95 which is not a bad price for the palette.

If you have a lot of Australis eye shadows already, chances are you have most of these colours as they are not exclusive to the palette but are from other quads etc.

The palette itself comes with a mirror which I personally think is a little too small to use for every day, and a double ended applicator.  If you wanted to take only this away with you though those things would be pretty useful.  The locking action is nice and firm as well.

The colours from left to right swatch (as well as the open palette) are as follows;

Intensfeye Trio Bees Knees Shade One
Paparazzi Perfect Snap Attack
Intensifeye Quad Choc-a-Block Shade One
Intensifeye Trio Bees Knees Shade Three
Intensifeye Quad Choc-a-Block Shade Two
Paparazzi Perfect A Lister Sista Dark
Paparazzi Perfeck Snap Attack
Intensifeye Quad Choc-a-Block Shade Three

While I do like this palette, my one complaint would be that these are all shimmer colours.  A matte highlight and crease colour would have completed this for me I think.  Never the less it is a very handy palette to have.  The colour payoff is quite good for the price, particularly in the darker colours, and they seem to stay put all day.

What do you think of the Australis Nudist Palette?

Sunday night haul

Now I know I'm on a spending ban!

But there were a couple of specials I couldn't pass up this week!  With Big W and Target having sales, I just HAD to get something.

Face of Australia Cleansing Wipes - I got these for only $1.46 I believe.  Big W had FOA $3 off and I though yup, these will be useful.

Australis Nudist palette - After all the fuss about this palette on Beauty Heaven, I just had to get this as soon as I found it.  I searched three different Target's for it and finally found it today :)  I'm planning on doing a swatch post tomorrow for you guys :)

Designer Brands Got the Blues for Mauve palette - I go to see Chicks at the Flicks monthly at my local Event Cinemas and each month you get a goodie bag.  This was in my bag this month.  The white colour is stunning! I used it to do my Sea Inspired Eyes tutorial.

Max Factor nail polish in Diva Violet - With Big W having $5 off Max Factor, this nail polish was only 48c!

Alberto Balsalm Clarifying Shampoo - My hair has felt a little gross the past couple of weeks and I've put it down to silicone build up.  My local Amcal sells these for $2.99 and this is a great clarifying shampoo.  It's really gentle but quite effective.

I also got my April BellaBox this week so I've been having loads of fun trying out those products.  I'm really happy because the Benefit foundation that I thought would be way to dark for me actually blends into my skin quite well!  Winning!

I also purchased all the goodies for my giveaway this week.  Don't forget to enter!

Tutorial - Sea inspired eyes

Hi Pretties

I know I had an eye post earlier today.  But I wanted to show you a quick tutorial on how I did my eyes for a family dinner tonight!  Tonight I had sea inspired eyes :)

The whole look is to the left.  I kept the rest of my face very minimal with only a dusting of blush (Models Prefer Desk to Date) and a lip gloss (Essence My Favourite Milk Shake).

 Products used

Step 1 - Prime your eyes.  I've used Mac Paint Pot in Bare Study

Step 2 - Apply a frosted or shimmer white on the inner half of your lid into the tear duct, and take below the eye again only half way across.  I've used the white from my DB Got the Blues for Mauve palette.  This is amazingly pigmented for how cheap it is.

Step 3 - Take a blue/green colour and apply to the outer part of your lids, and under the eye as a liner across the outer half of the eye.  I used a colour from my 88 shimmer palette.  You can get these from ebay or Coastal Scents.

Step 4 - Take the same colour and apply to the outer crease and v.  I like to keep the look simple as I think it is more effective with just the two colours and no darker colours.

Step 5 - Apply a highlight - I like Mac Blanc Type as it matte where the rest of my eye is a frost and shimmer.

Step 6 - Apply eyeliner to your entire water line.  I used Rimmel Exaggerate eye definer.

Step 7 - Line your lid.  I used Maybelline Master Precise liquid liner.

Step 8 - Curl your lashes and apply mascara.  I used Loreal Extra Volume Collagene mascara.

Here is the finished product!

That's my look for this evening!

Let me know if you would like to see more tutorials!

1 year of growing out my hair

Hi pretties

Today's blog is all about my hair!  One year ago today I decided I wanted happier, healthier hair and began actively growing out my hair.  I joined a fabulous online community to help me along the way called The Long Hair Community.

This is my hair one year ago!

This is my hair today!

It's not quite as long as I hoped.  I'm about an inch shorter than where I wanted to be, but it's getting there!

Throughout the past year I have learned to better take care of my hair, I only use heat about once a week now, never brush when wet and I have a whole range of beautiful hair toys to wear my hair up more and keep my hair protected.  I've stopped bleaching my hair and use only semi permanent dyes as well now.

Next goal, waist length!

Can I get there in a year?

Review - Biore gentle make up removing wipes

Hi lovelies

Just a quick review for you on the Biore gentle make up removing wipes - with purifying green tea.

Biore claims these wipes 'instantly remove all traces of make up (including waterproof mascara) oil and daily impurities'.

I tried this sample product to remove my normal every day make up and I was pretty pleased.  Initially when I opened it up the I thought the smell was lovely.  Nice and refreshing and just like green tea.

The size of the wipe is fairly decent for and it feels sort of thin compared to other make up remover wipes I have used, but it is still nice and soft and definitely not scratchy.

I do not wear heavy make up, or waterproof mascara and I was very happy with the job this wipe did.  It removed most of my make up although I still had a tiny amount of mascara remaining under my eyes when I washed with my cleanser.  No more than I would have by normal washing though, and not enough to make me dislike the product.

My only complaint would be a slight sting around the eye area, but I find this is pretty average with most wipes.  The sting quickly went away when I washed my face with water.

I would rate this product 4/5 and would definitely try again.

Caitlin xoxo

NOTD - Ulta3 Jade

Hi Pretties

Here is my nail of the day!  It is Ulta3 nail colour in Jade and I received this in my April Bellabox.  A luxury sample this is not.  The RRP is only $2 on these nail polishes so after I've had a bit more of a think I'm a little disappointed to get this in my BellaBox.

I own about 4 of these nail polishes.  Some I like, some I don't.  One I think is the best wearing nail polish I own.  Last night when I put this on I really really liked the colour.  I thought it went on pretty well, a little streaky but that might just be my application skills but apart from that I was pleased.

THEN this morning as I reached into my bag to get my keys out I managed to scratch up 4 nails on my left hand.  This is over 8 hours since application!  Very disappointing.  Now I didn't use top coat, but I don't use a top coat with any nail polish and I don't normally have this problem.

Thumbs down to Ulta3 nail polish in Jade.

Road tested - Revlon Lip Butters

Hi Pretties

I’ve FINALLY had the chance to give my Revlon Lip Butters a good trial. Yea! Now I have 4 of these babies, 1 was a gift a couple of weeks ago from my man and the others I picked up at Priceline in their buy one get one free sale when I got the beauty bag.

The colours I purchased are (L-R) Crème Brule, Cupcake, Sweet Tart and Berry Smoothie. I so badly want to love everything about these cult items, but I’m only 75% sold on them! I think they staying power is a little different between the colours, as is the moisture they provide. I think the packaging is really cute but I think they are WAY overpriced. Getting them buy one get one free is great, but I wouldn’t pay the $21.95 AUD for them.

Without Flash
With flash

Crème Brule: I think this colour is a beautiful nude. I do have highly pigmented lips, so it does take me several swipes to build up some colour and when I do I get a very wearable pale browny/nude colour. This lip butter goes on very smooth and initially feels quite moisturising but after half a day or so I found this butter turned out to be quite drying and started to settle into the cracks in my lips it had created. This is such shame because I love the colour so much! I do find I have this problem with most nudes though so it is really nothing new.

Cupcake: By far the sheerest of the lip butters I purchased, this is a very pale cool toned pink and it could be my pigmented lips but I find the lasting power of this particular lip butter to be quite poor. It only seems to last about an hour where the others last much longer. This shade is quite moisturising and still feels great even after the colour has faded to a sheer gloss.

Sweet Tart: This is a hot pink that gives you a great punch of colour. It is very bright, but still wearable and not too in your face. Very moisturising and very pigmented. So pigmented in fact it lasts around 5 hours even with eating and drinking! The downfall I feel to this colour is that it does smudge out a little from your lips and give you what I like to call a ‘bolognaise ring’. This could probably be solved by using lip liner, I just don’t use them.

Berry Smoothie: My first and favourite lip butter. My man bought this as a gift for me the first day we saw them as I had been talking about them for weeks. This is a great autumn colour (read about my favourite autumn lipsticks here!), and has great staying power. I didn’t find this colour to run either with this one, unlike with Sweet Tart. I don’t think this lip butter is quite as moisturising as Cupcake and Sweet Tart and within a few hours my lips started to feel pretty neutral but upon inspection in the mirror the colour was still quite strong and my lips didn’t suffer and cracks so I’m happy.

It seems that the Revlon Lip Butters are a little hit and miss in my opinion, some being great and others not as much. I’m generally happy with them, but do I think they are worth they hype? Probably not; and this comes down to the RRP in Australia. I don’t think they are worth $21.95 when they are only about US$6. I’d happily pay $6 or even $12 AUD as our products are generally twice the price, but not the RRP of $21.95.

What is your experience with the lip butters? Do you love them? Or are they a bit overhyped?
